(PHOENIX, June 1, 2011) – The world famous Harlem Globetrotters are honoring future Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal with a “Trotter Tribute” in recognition of his stellar 19-year NBA career. Shaq announced his retirement from the NBA today.
Shaq’s personality on and off the court truly embodies the spirit of the Harlem Globetrotters, as his standout playing career is matched only by the fun he had with his teammates, fans, and the media. Among the many colorful nicknames he bestowed upon himself were: The Diesel, The Big Aristotle, Shaq Fu, and The Shaqtus. He starred in movies and on reality TV, recorded rap albums, and has been involved in law enforcement.
His list of on-court accomplishments is staggering. He won four NBA titles (being named Finals MVP three times), was a 15-time All-Star selection (second only to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), the league’s MVP in 2000, and the 1993 NBA Rookie of the Year. His 28,596 career points are fifth all-time, and his 5,250 postseason points rank fourth all-time. He is third all-time in postseason games played, with 216, and his 13 seasons of averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game are the most in NBA history.
“If I had to pick one NBA player I would consider ‘Globetrotter-esque,’ it would have to be Shaq,” said Globetrotters Showman Big Easy Lofton. “His combination of phenomenal basketball talent and entertaining personality is hard to top…and he has enough nicknames to field two whole teams.”
The “Trotter Tribute” honors professional and college athletes from all sports throughout the world whose play calls to mind the dazzling showmanship of “the world’s most famous team.”
The honor is designed to recognize amazing and entertaining moments during the course of competition. Members of the media often refer to unbelievable plays as “Globetrotter-esque,” signifying fantastic athletic feats, as well as the unique trademark the team has emblazoned in incorporating entertainment into sports.
