Chip sales rise despite price cuts

Despite plunging prices for CPUs, worldwide semiconductor sales rose 9.4 percent from last year, reaching $58.9 billion for the second quarter. This is great news for the industry and shows that the industry is still alive and kicking even though Microsoft Vista is delayed.

The industry struggled as giants Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) slashed prices in new chip wars, helping to drive the average price of a laptop down by 18 percent compared to the second quarter of 2005, according to figures released Thursday by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). That global trend was mirrored in the U.S. where the average price for retail notebook PCs dropped from $1,141 in the second quarter of 2005 to $938 a year later, according to Current Analysis.

Apple to move quickly on Merom-based systems

Unwilling to relent in its assault on the US notebook market, Apple Computer plans to adopt Intel Corp.'s latest mobile processors at a rapid pace, AppleInsider has learned. According to a source familiar with the Mac maker's plans, the company is slated to receive mass shipments of the new Merom Core 2 Duo processors by the first week of September and plans to be amongst the first PC manufacturers to introduce systems based on the new chips. It will be interesting to see if Apple is the first company out the door with Intel Merom based products.

In the three-month period ending July 1st, Apple reported record-setting shipments of Mac systems, including nearly 800,000 notebooks -- 75 percent of which the company estimated were Intel-based. So far, the success of Apple's Intel systems has hinged on a single line of processors, the 32-bit Core Duo series formerly code-named Yonah. But in recent weeks, Intel has rolled-out far more capable chips in its 64-bit line of Core 2 Duo processors, including a mobile variant known by its code-named Merom.

Double the cores, double the chip heat?

The earth may be heating up, but Intel and Advanced Micro Devices are determined to keep PC warming trends in check. The article over at CNET is an interesting read and talks about quad-core Kentsfield moving over to a 45nm process next year!

Intel, fresh off the launch of its Core 2 Duo chips, has announced plans to accelerate the introduction of a quad-core processor called Kentsfield, now expected in the fourth quarter. Not to be outdone, AMD later this year will release a product called "4x4," which is two AMD processors connected together on a high-end motherboard. Intel hasn't announced specific plans for quad-core processors beyond Kentsfield, Alfs said. Sources familiar with Intel's plans have indicated that when the company is ready to move from its current 65-nanometer manufacturing process to a 45-nanometer one next year, it will start with dual-core chips to make the transition easier. And then at some later date, it will be ready to build quad-core chips with the smaller 45-nanometer transistors on a single piece of silicon, unlike the multichip package used for Kentsfield.

Google in 3-Way Media Player Deal

Google, maker of fine search products, and RealNetworks, maker of a loathsome yet inexplicably popular media player, have extended their deal to promote Google software across Real's entertainment and multimedia products. Mozilla is horning in on the action too. Together, all three of the companies have agreed to distribute Firefox and the Google Toolbar along with Real's RealPlayer software.

The deal is only Google's latest distribution pact. Earlier this year Google signed agreements with computer maker Dell to distribute software on its desktops and laptops, and with software company Adobe to distribute Google Toolbar via downloads of Adobe's Shockwave. Mozilla's Firefox browser is currently used by about 15 percent of Web users. RealPlayer is currently the second most popular media software after Windows Media Player, with about 28 million unique users. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

No. 3 PC maker Gateway Loses $7.7 million

Gateway maintained its track record of underachievement, as the No. 3 PC maker in the U.S. reported weaker-than-expected results Thursday. Irvine, Calif.-based Gateway said it lost $7.7 million, or 2 cents a share, on $919 million in sales in the three months ended June 30, compared with a profit of $17.2 million, or 5 cents a share, on sales of $873 million the same time a year ago.

Wall Street analysts were looking for the computer maker to earn a profit of 2 cents a share, with $1 billion in revenue, according to Thomson Financial. Shares of Gateway rose 0.6%, or one penny, to $1.60 in extended trading. The company's stock is trading near its 52-week low. Two weeks ago, Gateway was dropped from the S&P 500. "While we are disappointed with our performance in the second quarter, we believe that our efforts in the first half of the year are beginning to resonate with customers and move us in a positive direction," said interim CEO Rick Snyder in a statement.

SAO PAULO, Brasil, ago. 2, 2006.- Las Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara sufren un doloroso revés al caer en calidad de visitantes 3-0 (4-0 global) ante el actual campeón del torneo, el Sao Paulo de Brasil, en el duelo de este miércoles celebrado en el Estadio Morumbí, correspondiente al cotejo de ‘vuelta’ en las semifinales de la Copa Libertadores de América 2006.

Los goles brasileños fueron obra de Leandro (al minuto 33), Mineiro (40') y Ricardo Oliveira (48'). Ramón Morales falló un penal para Chivas al minuto 28.

Sao Paulo enfrentará en la gran final al ganador de la semifinal disputada entre Libertad de Paraguay y el Internacional de Brasil; el duelo de ‘ida’ de estos equipos finalizó empatado sin goles.

EN LA IDA:

Las Chivas dejaron escapar la ventaja de jugar en casa y perdieron 1-0 en el Estadio Jalisco, el pasado miércoles. El único gol del partido fue del arquero brasileño Rogeiro Ceni, de penal a cinco minutos del final.

Este Blog va a estar muy abandonado hasta por lo menos el día 23 o 24 de Agosto.

El Lunes me voy al hemisferio SUR a conocer las instalaciones de la empresa en Sao Paulo y regreso hasta el sabado (con el vuelototote y la diferencia de horarios casí casí el domingo

El Lunes siguiente me voy a Baja California a una visita de la chamba por Mexicali, Ensenada y Tijuana (si tuviera Visa y billete$ de una vez me traía un CORE 2 DUO y una mother para acompañarlo), regreso en la madrugada del Sabado (otra vez la diferencia de horarios, salgo a las 18 y llego a las 23 y el vuelo es de tan sólo tres horas) llego a mi casa, duermo me voy al servicio y de ahí a la boda de mi cuate Uziel

El día 20 creo que estaré en calidad de bulto, pero espero tener mucho que contar, haber hecho un buen trabajo y haber aprendido mucho.

CSI show 'most popular in world'

CSI: Miami launched in 2002 and was the first CSI spin-off show

Forensic drama CSI: Miami has been named the world's most popular TV show in a study of ratings in 20 countries.

The programme - starring David Caruso - made the top 10 viewing charts in more of those nations than any other show.

Lost and Desperate Housewives were at numbers two and three, followed by Colombian soap Te Voy a Ensenar a Querer, or I Will Teach You to Love.

The survey, which was conducted by Informa Telecoms and Media, has been published by Radio Times magazine.

The executive producer of CSI: Miami - broadcast on CBS in the US and Five in the UK - has two more shows in the top 10.

Jerry Bruckheimer's original CSI, set in Las Vegas, at number six and missing persons drama Without a Trace in seventh place.

Spanish language

Te Voy a Ensenar a Querer - telling the story of a father and son who are both in love with the same woman - is one of three Spanish language titles included in the survey.

It was funded partially by American network NBC as a way of creating programming for the growing Hispanic population in the US.

There is only one children's programme in the top 10 - The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, which is made by Nickleodeon, at number 10.

"The objective of our research was to find the most consistently successful programme worldwide in terms of attracting viewers," said Adam Thomas, the media research manager responsible for the study.

"We were not therefore concerned with shows that performed extremely well in a relatively small number of markets.

"CSI: Miami was therefore named the most popular programme because it featured in more country top 10 rankings for 2005 than any other," he told the BBC News website.

Corría el año de 1990

Si no mal recuerdo fue en Mayo (¿O marzo?), yo tenía nueve años y estaba en cuarto grado de primaria.

En el canal 5 empezaron a transmitir una serie que al parecer había sido muy exitosa dos años atras en los Estados Unidos. Esa seríe eran las Tortugas Ninja (ó Las ninja tortugas adolescentes mutantes o TMNT, que es más acorde con la tendencia gringa de abreviar todo) y fueron un trancazo instantaneo, luego luego empezo a salir el comic (del cual vale la pena hablar más adelante porque se hacian historia aquí en México, obviamente situadas en NY pero por artistas mexicanos, que me imagino cobraban en viejos pesos), el album de helados Holanda, los juegos para NES y luego SNES, los muñecos "chafas" en los tianguis y la pelicula, que se estreno en Julio del 90 y la secuela en Junio del 91 (Una tercera parte en el 93 cuando ya habían perdido mucho gas y el comic ya no daba una),bueno a mi me gustaban mucho, de hecho estuve jode y jode a mi mamá hasta que hizo un a micro gabardina para mis juguetes, de hecho tuve (hasta fechas recientes) un monton de posters de las Tortugas que compraba a la salida de la escuela (ah.... la nostalgia), pero sigamos, esas peliculas de las tortugas no eran particularmente buenas (Hasta Vanilla Ice aparecio en una de ellas y participo en el soundtrack) pero cumplian con su cometido $$$$$$, la tercera de hecho ya trata de viajes y nos remonta a Japón, esa pelicula en 1993 fue algo así como una de esasa despedidas que uno no se da cuenta o no sabe por cuanto tiempo , ya saben, si es adios o hasta siempre, hace no mucho vi una nueva serie de estos personajes, que innovaba poco pero les presentaba a los encaparazonados a la generación que nacio despues de ese primer exito masivo de los 90 y hubo una serie de juegos (de mecánica muy simple) para xbox,PS2, gamecube y LA plataforma PC CD rom que me rencontraron con mis amados anfibios con nombre renaceentista y ahora ya estoy contando los minutos (con menos ansias que para Spiderman III, pero contando al fin) para que se estrene la nueva pelicula que muy probablemente no me guste pero yo siempre asisto a mis citas con la nostalgia.
